If this is the correct collective memory series

This series - If this is the correct collective memory - comprises different works, including prints, sculptures, and objects. In this series, I explore my early life experiences in China through the remote perspective of my life in America. During the process of making this work, I realized that as individuals living in society- regardless of nationality- we often share a collective memory that is mostly constructed in the unconscious by our external environment which affects how we approach and perceive things as we grow up. Thus, to rethink and relearn this collective memory when we can engage with society more critically is to question what has been established, and redefine what has been given to us.

In this work, I chose to use the Red Book of Chairman Mao as a start point. The book contanis many political ideologies and theories that is important in modern Chinese history, and it is still being researched and talked about often in today’s Chinese society. In the prints, I edited a page from the book by reducting and recontextualizing the text. Though the message is the opposite of its original meaning, it generates a new type of ideology that can still be questionable.
