One thousand and thirty-eight
2021, Duration 3h47mmin
Inkjet print photos, performance
The work comprises two videos recording the performance and a series of photographs documenting the process. In the first part of the performance, I write numbers in Chinese on my body, reaching as far as I can, while counting them out loud. I start with one on my left toe and end with one thousand and thirty-eight on my face. In the second part, I wash off the ink with water and soap in a box. Though mostly washed off, the ink remains visible on some parts of my skin. The performance takes place in a studio where I am the only person present. This isolated environment minimizes distractions, intensifying my emotions throughout the performance.
The physical actions dominate me during the performance, making it almost impossible to feel or care about anything else. When I finished the work and viewed it as an audience member, I began to draw associations between the work and the external world, and interpretations emerged. Meanings arise from the numbers I count, the act of writing on one's body, and other aspects of the work.
