Sometimes I think writing an artist statement is an attempt to define a work, and to some extent, it denies the constantly changing nature of art as it exists in different contexts. For this specific piece, "Extremely Personal, Extremely Political, and All the Thoughts in Between," so many materials and pieces of information can be received and expressed differently.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of subjects that were on my mind during the creation of this work:
Free Palestine / dismantle imperialist, fascist, and capitalist state power and its supporters (e.g., cops, war profiters, etc)
Mutual aid, community, what it means to be in a community, and how to build and earn trust within it
Questioning everything: why? why not?
The difficult process of unlearning and unpacking, and also the joy of doing it
History: how do we learn it? From what perspective are we viewing it? What can we apply to the present moment from learning history?
Romantic love feels more sincere in memory
There is much more I could say about this work, but as I mentioned earlier, my thoughts about it change every time I reflect on it, and I’d like to leave space for these changes. If you have any questions or would like to chat, feel free to email me.
